Project Associate – Hygiene (WASH)

About the role

The Project Associate, Hygiene (WASH) will support the implementation of hygiene promotion and community engagement activities within IOM’s WASH programme in Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Based in Ukhiya, the role involves regular field visits across the seven IOM camps to ensure quality and consistency of interventions.

Key responsibilities

• Assist in monitoring hygiene promotion and community engagement activities carried out by all WASH partners to verify alignment with sector guidelines.
• Support camp staff in planning, coordinating and executing hygiene promotion activities, including distribution of WASH non‑food items.
• Conduct regular field visits to monitor construction work, promote community participation in design, operation and maintenance of WASH facilities, and document challenges and lessons learned.
• Facilitate active beneficiary participation and ownership of WASH projects.
• Support partner field staff in delivering community awareness programmes, training and mentoring volunteers, hygiene promoters and WASH committee members.
• Collaborate on capacity‑building initiatives for implementing and operational partners.
• Collect, process and analyse data on health, hygiene behaviours and community satisfaction to inform programme planning.
• Assist M&E teams in behavioural research and surveys to develop culturally appropriate IEC materials and behaviour‑change tools.
• Provide on‑the‑job guidance and contribute to innovative hygiene promotion approaches.

Required profile

• Works under the direct supervision of the WASH Program Manager and in matrix management with the National Programme Officer (WASH).
• Based in Ukhiya with willingness to travel extensively across IOM camps.
